vidhya academy

In Kundapura, where rivers meet the sea and tradition shapes everyday life, this school was envisioned as a place where children can grow, learn and belong. Designed for the Moodlakatte Nagarathna Bhujanga Shetty Trust (MNBS Trust), the project reimagines an existing campus constrained by limited space, infrastructure and play areas into a connected learning landscape. Rooted in the belief that education extends beyond academics, the design weaves together space, nature and community to foster holistic development, interaction and lifelong learning.

Rather than simply expanding the existing campus, the project reimagines the school as a connected learning landscape where education extends beyond classrooms into shared spaces that encourage collaboration, movement and discovery. Rooted in the region's Mangaluru tile and brick-making traditions, the architecture draws from local materials, climate and culture, with laterite, clay tiles and a yellow-green palette grounding the campus in its context while reflecting the institution's identity.

The project is envisioned in two phases. Phase One lays the foundation with the primary learning spaces, while future expansion is designed to accommodate the evolving needs of the students and the community. At the entrance, a double-height plaza roofed with Mangalore tiles welcomes users into the campus. This plaza serves as an organizing node, connecting the various facilities across the campus.

The library is conceived as a layered learning world that blends formal and informal spaces. It opens into reading pits designed for storytelling sessions and extends upward into a mezzanine level that overlooks quieter zones of study and reflection.

Within this framework, spaces such as the library and swimming pool are envisioned as shared community resources open to the public. They remain active during holidays and whenever time permits. This openness reflects the belief that learning is continuous, unconfined by timetables and can happen at any moment one chooses to engage with it.

From here, corridors unfold as learning streets connecting classrooms to courtyards and spill-out spaces. These are not merely passages but active zones of interaction where students across age groups meet, observe, play and learn informally. Skylights and carefully placed cut-outs filter natural light into these corridors, casting shifting patterns of shadow and brightness that bring rhythm and quiet movement to everyday circulation.

Connecting all these corridors are courtyards that act as social and environmental anchors drawing light, air and nature into the daily life of the school. Even circulation becomes active, no longer just movement but moments of pause, play and connection.

Inside the classrooms, learning extends onto the ground itself through engaging floor patterns that encourage interaction, play and informal exploration, making learning tactile and immediate.

More than individual spaces, it is the in-between conditions that define the school. Corridors, courtyards and informal gathering areas become the true carriers of experience where memory is formed and a sense of belonging gradually takes root. Here, relationships between students, space and time are quietly built, often lasting long after they leave the institution.

Rooted deeply in context and community, the school becomes an evolving landscape designed not just for learning but for living, remembering and belonging.
