This café was inspired by that very feeling. Started by a group of friends who share a love for travel, coffee, and slow breakfasts, it was envisioned as a place that celebrated their roots while creating a welcoming space for people to gather, connect and unwind.

The project occupied the site of a former café, bringing with it a few challenges but also a special opportunity. At its centre stood an Indian almond tree, commanding attention with its broad canopy, the ever-changing colours of its leaves and the patterns of light and shadow beneath it. It soon became clear that the tree would be the heart of the project, shaping both the layout and the atmosphere of the space.

From the moment visitors arrive, a series of gently curving pathways lead them through the café. One path draws them towards a terracotta-toned service counter and casual seating arranged around the tree, while another leads to the sheltered indoor dining area. The spaces flow naturally into one another, offering a mix of seating options for different moments, whether it's a quick coffee, a solo work session or a long catch-up with friends. The café also includes low seating areas, providing a relaxed and comfortable setting for guests who prefer to sit cross-legged.

The design takes cues from the site and the name ‘Terra Haus’, which blends terra (earth) and haus (house), meaning an “earth house.” Warm tones inspired by the landscape, natural materials and lush greenery make the café feel grounded and at home in its setting. Every seating element is designed for comfort, encouraging people to slow down and stay a little longer.

Rooted in its surroundings and shaped by the presence of the tree, the café feels relaxed, familiar and unmistakably at home in Manipal. It is a place where everyday rituals are celebrated and where the spirit of the town quietly comes to life.
