The east-facing home welcomes soft morning light, while shaded western spaces remain cool throughout the day. Centered around a prominent structural column, the living, study, and dining areas flow from the pooja space, culminating in the clients’ cherished Dashavatara paintings.
The pooja nook connects to the Tulasi katte through a circumambulatory path inspired by the Garbhagriha and Pradakshinapatha. A custom-built sofa encircles the central column, highlighting a cherished local artifact.
The kitchen features an island that serves as a dining space. Much like the Rathabeedi, a temporally dynamic social street centered around community gathering, the connection between the study and kitchen unfolds into an extended space designed for bringing people together, ideal for hosting gatherings.
A swing is positioned nearby, adding a playful touch. On the opposite side of the column lies the study area, complemented by a storage nook for everyday essentials and local artifacts.
To bring a personal touch, locally sourced Udupi fabrics were used to craft the shutters for the storage units in the bedrooms, adding warmth and character to the home.

Nestled in the temple town of Udupi, a couple envisioned their three-bedroom apartment as a spacious sanctuary rooted in local culture and tradition. Inspired by the town’s farms, temples, and the revered Rathabeedi—a vibrant cultural and social spine where daily life, gatherings, and celebrations unfold—the home draws deeply from the spirit of its surroundings.
